More bad news for Austin: UNC suspends star DT

By Bud L. Ellis

Marvin Austin finds himself in the news again, and again it’s not good for the University of North Carolina star defensive tackle.

Already at the center of an NCAA investigation focused on potential improper benefits players received from agents, Austin now will definitely not play in the season opener after being suspended indefinitely Wednesday for violating unspecified team rules. (Read More…)

Tar Heels’ defense in trouble academically

By Bud L. Ellis

On Saturday, a big part of the college football nation will cast its eyes toward the Georgia Dome in Atlanta, where the University of North Carolina Tar Heels will play in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Classic.

The matchup between the No. 18 Heels and 21st-ranked LSU was to be about kicking off a season that UNC hoped would culminate in an Atlantic Coast Conference championship. Instead, the focus on Saturday will be on just who plays and who doesn’t for the Heels. (Read More…)

Of course, the Heels are considered one of the nation’s better squads as well, as shown by their ranking in The Associated Press preseason rankings, which were released last weekend. (Read More…)

With nine starters returning on defense, there is plenty of optimism and excitement surrounding the University of North Carolina football team.

UNC tabbed fourth in Coastal in media voting

By Bud L. Ellis

In voting by the media for the predicted order of finish in the Atlantic Coast Conference this football season, five members see the University of North Carolina Tar Heels playing for the conference championship.

The Heels earned enough points in the voting to finish fourth in the Coastal Division. But the gap between first and fourth was snug. (Read More…)

Heels land five defenders on all-ACC squad

By Bud L. Ellis

Robert Quinn, Marvin Austin, Quan Sturdivant, Kendric Burney and Deunta Williams helped the North Carolina Tar Heels field one of the top defenses in college football in 2009.

More of the same is expected in 2010.

The quintet of Tar Heels landed on the Preseason All-Atlantic Coast Conference team, giving UNC more players on the team than any other school. (Read More…)

NCAA investigates UNC football program

The NCAA is investigating the North Carolina Tar Heels football program for possible violations.

It is believed that the NCAA is looking into whether any players accepted gifts or received benefits.

The NCAA is closely looking into the program in hopes of avoiding another Reggie Bush situation.

Some players who could end up being first round picks were asked for their phone records so the NCAA could see which agents they may have spoken with. (Read More…)

Davis staying put

Despite possible interest from other schools, it appears North Carolina head coach Butch Davis is staying put.

Davis is unlikely to find a better job or be offered a better contract from the schools interested in him.

In addition, it would be a particularly bad time for Davis to leave North Carolina considering the returning talent. (Read More…)

McAdoo may play for UNC in 2010

North Carolina Tar Heels committ James McAdoo may graduate high school early and play for the team in 2010.

McAdoo, the nephew of the legendary Bob McAdoo, needs just one more English course to earn his GED.

He is currently rated as one of the top players of the 2011 class, so he could come in and help the Tar Heels immediately.

That said, he is a year younger than most other freshman, which could make for a more difficult transition to college.

The early-entry into college from high school is becoming more popular these days as kids get a jump-start on their basketball careers.

Tar Heels Continue Slide, Lose At Home To Duke, 64-54

The Tar Heels, dangerously close to missing the NCAA tournament one year removed from winning the national championship, continued their slide at home on Wednesday night against their least favorite of rivals, as they lost to Duke, 64-54.

On the night the Tar Heels retired Tyler Hansbrough’s No. 50, the Tar Heels of new couldn’t look any further removed from the Tar Heels of old than they did.

UNC, which has lost four straight and seven of its last eight overall, gave the Blue Devils a scare, but fell apart late when Duke finally starting knocking down shots.

“I thought we had the intensity the first 30 minutes that we needed and should have had the whole season,” Williams said. “After that … they seemed hungrier to get [to the boards] and we just didn’t go a good job of boxing out or chasing the ball.”

“We were right there and there’s been a lot of games where we’ve been right there and one stretch made it worse than it was,” said Will Graves, who had a team-high 13 points. “I don’t take a moral victory from it. We’ve got to keep coming back to work.”
